A guide to gaming with your family

By: William Moore

Who should play?

- Many families looking to spend time together have turned to video games as a way to connect.
- With the current economic conditions, video games are an affordable option for spending time together.

What should you play?

- Many game companies are producing family-friendly “party” games that are fun for up to four people.
- Games such as “Mario Party” present a traditional multiplayer board game in video game format.
- Music games such as “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” let you take on the persona of a rock star as you perform classic hits using instrument peripherals.

Wii want to play!

- The popular Nintendo Wii uses a remote and sensor bar to detect movements, getting gamers off the couch as they perform actions such as playing tennis or bowling.
- Boxing, golf and archery are among some of the many sports and activities that can be replicated in your living room using the Wii.

Why should the family play?

- Many parents struggle to find ways to connect with their kids. By joining the kids in a friendly and fun video game, many parents have found new ways to connect.
- A single game costs around the same or even less than the amount it would take for a family of four to go to dinner and a movie. Compared to the one night of entertainment, a video game can provide weeks of family fun.
